USDA organic certification affords the U.S. consumer one of the only food quality protections available today, but does it really guarantee a food product is chemical free?
Hormones and/or hormone-mimicking chemicals are omnipresent environmental contaminants. Already found in places as varied as our teeth (dental sealant) to our paper products (receipts, money), our meat to our canned foods, new research now indicates that even fresh, whole vegetables and fruits are no longer immune to this growing biological and chemical threat.
Is sustainable food an all or nothing construct like truth or pregnancy? If we do not, as consumers, buy 100% organic, 100% sustainably sourced food 100% of the time are we doomed to a fate of ill health and - worse - relegated to the periphery of our communities and blamed for the demise of the earth?
Above all else, the United States is the marketing capital of the world. Our society is built around products and services and all the ways they are advertised to us in a way designed to outpace the competition. While it may be unethical to do so, marketing fosters its share of lying, truth-twisting and censorship by omission. The food industry is a model food chain — the big guys try to swallow the small guys, which is why organic foods are slandered by food giants and Big Agra.
