In an era of unprecedented online censorship, one natural health website has found itself at the center of a coordinated campaign to restrict access to potentially life-saving information. GreenMedInfo, founded by Sayer Ji in 2008, hosts a vast database of scientific studies on natural substances - information that threatens to undermine pharmaceutical profits. This is the story of the sustained, multi-year effort to silence GreenMedInfo and limit public access to alternative health information - an effort that reaches to the highest levels of global power.
Early Warning Signs: The Opening Salvos
The attack on GreenMedInfo began subtly but escalated quickly. In November 2018, NewsGuard - a self-proclaimed internet watchdog funded by prominent organizations and with ties to the U.S. Department of Defense - initiated its first censorship attempt against the site. Just one month later, Pinterest took more overt action, banning GreenMedInfo's account entirely.
These moves foreshadowed the coordinated campaign to come. By April 2019, Facebook had begun restricting and reducing the distribution of GreenMedInfo's content, significantly curtailing its reach. The justification? A Gates Foundation-funded "fact-checker" called PolitiFact had accused the site of sharing false information.
Sayer Ji, GreenMedInfo's founder, noted: "Because Politifact is in partnership with Facebook as a so-called 'non-partisan,' 3rd party, fact-checker, they flagged our page as promoting 'false news' and informed us that 'Your Page has reduced distribution and other restrictions because of repeated sharing of false news.'"1
The Google Digital Book Burn
The censorship campaign reached new heights in June 2019 when Google implemented a core algorithm update that decimated traffic to natural health websites virtually overnight. Dubbed the "Medic Update," it disproportionately impacted health and medical sites:
"Over 42% of the 300 sites impacted by this update were specifically in the medical, health, fitness, and healthy lifestyle space. This skewed impact raised eyebrows and led to speculation that the update was deliberately targeting the natural health niche."2
GreenMedInfo saw its Google search visibility plummet by over 81% following the update.3 Founder Sayer Ji called it a "digital book burning" that made alternative medicine content "vanishingly rare" in search results.4
The impact was devastating. On January 30, 2019, GreenMedInfo's social media traffic accounted for 38% of all site traffic. By August 2024, that figure had plummeted to just 6.7%.5
Global Elite Involvement: The Institute for Strategic Dialogue
In 2020, the targeting of GreenMedInfo reached a new level with the involvement of the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), a UK-based think tank with ties to some of the most powerful individuals and organizations in the world.
ISD, founded by British publishing magnate Lord Weidenfeld (an honorary member of the Club of Rome), identified GreenMedInfo as one of 34 "disinformation-hosting websites" in a report on "Far-right exploitation of Covid-19." This report was produced in collaboration with BBC Click and relied on data from NewsGuard, further illustrating the interconnected nature of the forces arrayed against alternative health information.
The ISD's board has included figures like General the Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank, former Chief of the Defence Staff and former director of N M Rothschild and Sons. Its funding comes from sources including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, George Soros's Open Society Foundations, and various government agencies.
By labeling GreenMedInfo and other natural health sites as purveyors of "disinformation" and associating them with "far-right" extremism, the ISD provided a pretext for further censorship and suppression.
The "Disinformation Dozen" Defamation Campaign
Building on the groundwork laid by the ISD, the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) - a UK-based organization with murky funding sources - published its infamous "Disinformation Dozen" report in March 2021. This report labeled Sayer Ji and 11 others as being responsible for the majority of online vaccine misinformation, despite using deeply flawed methodology.
The report was seized upon by media outlets and government officials, including the White House, to pressure social media companies into further censorship. The culmination came in July 2021 when President Biden himself accused the group of "killing people" with misinformation.6
However, the truth eventually came to light. In August 2021, Facebook revealed the report's claims were wildly inaccurate. The "Disinformation Dozen" were actually responsible for only about 0.05% of views of vaccine-related content - a 1300-fold difference from CCDH's figure.7
By this point, however, the damage was done. In July 2021, Facebook permanently deleted GreenMedInfo's page with over 500,000 followers, effectively cutting off a major channel of communication with its audience.
Government Involvement and Financial Censorship
The censorship campaign wasn't limited to social media. In a shocking admission, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki acknowledged that the government was colluding with private companies to suppress information.8 This collusion became even more evident when the Department of Homeland Security issued a Terrorism Bulletin in August 2021 that described vaccine hesitancy as a potential terrorist threat, further stigmatizing the content shared by GreenMedInfo.9
The attack extended to financial services as well. In March 2022, PayPal shut down GreenMedInfo's business account, as well as Ji's personal PayPal and Venmo accounts, citing "the nature of your activities".10
The AI-Driven Censorship Machine
Recent revelations have shed light on the extent of the censorship regime targeting GreenMedInfo and others. Investigative work by Kris Ruby has revealed that organizations like the CCDH provided censorship word lists to Twitter, which were then incorporated into AI-driven content moderation systems. This means that the suppression of alternative health information was not just manual, but algorithmic and operating at scale across social media platforms.
Why Big Pharma Fears GreenMedInfo
At the heart of this censorship campaign lies GreenMedInfo's powerful database of scientific research on natural health interventions. With over 50,000 study abstracts, it represents a formidable threat to pharmaceutical profits by revealing safer, cheaper alternatives to many drugs.
Turmeric provides an illustrative example. GreenMedInfo has compiled over 2,600 study abstracts on turmeric and its compounds, demonstrating effects potentially equivalent to over 14 different pharmaceutical drugs.11 These studies suggest turmeric may match or exceed the efficacy of certain medications for:
- Lipitor/Atorvastatin (cholesterol medication)
- Corticosteroids (steroid medications)
- Prozac/Fluoxetine & Imipramine (antidepressants)
- Aspirin (blood thinner)
- Metformin (diabetes drug)
With information like this freely available, it's no wonder why Big Pharma might view GreenMedInfo as a threat to its bottom line.
The Battle Continues
Despite these relentless attacks from some of the most powerful organizations in the world, GreenMedInfo continues its mission of educating the public on natural health options. Ji and his team have migrated to alternative platforms and launched new initiatives to circumvent censorship.
The battle over GreenMedInfo represents a microcosm of the larger war on medical freedom of information. As censorship intensifies, the health of millions hangs in the balance. Will powerful financial interests succeed in silencing sites like GreenMedInfo? Or will the truth about natural medicine ultimately prevail?
